The stork is headed to Pine Valley very soon. Soaps.com has learned that Jacob Young (JR) and new wife Christen are going to be first time parents! Jacob and his wife Christen have announced they are expecting their first child, a son, later this year! The baby is due in November and they already have a name picked out for the little one - Luke Wayne Young. Jacob says they wanted a biblical tie (hence the Luke part) and a family tie; since his middle name is Wayne, they chose to name the little one after his daddy! How sweet! Jacob and Christen were married on May 13, 2007. Jacob's character, JR Chandler, may not be the best of Pine Valley's dads, but he certainly tries very hard to be a better dad than on-screen-pop Adam. With all that practice at being a pretend dad, we have a feeling that Jacob is going to fill out his daddy shoes quite nicely! Soaps.com congratulates the happy couple. Last year, audiences had the opportunity to catch Robert Newman's thrilling live performance in The Full Monty. This year, the Guiding Light actor will be returning to the stage again, but will be bringing thrills of a different kind. The versatile performer, best known for playing Josh Lewis on and off since 1981, won't be doffing his duds this time around, but he will be lending his impressive vocal skills and impeccable presence to a production of the musical Shenandoah. Based on the classic film starring James Stewart, the musical tells the story of a Virginia farmer battling to keep his family out of the Civil War as it rages around them. Newman will be playing the lead role of Charlie Anderson in this revival of the 1975 Broadway musical which features music by Gary Geld, lyrics by Peter Udell, and a book by Udell, Philip Rose and James Lee Barrett. This production will be held at the famed Barn Theatre in Augusta, Michigan. Performances will run from August the 5th until August the 17th, 2008. The 2009 Soap Cruise is prepped and ready to launch with a slew of first time and returning actors. One of the familiar faces fans can expect to see aboard the ship is Brandon Beemer, who plays Owen on The Bold and the Beautiful, and who had so much fun last year, he had to come back for more. When I spoke with him on the phone, Beemer apologized for calling later than we had scheduled, but he had a good excuse. “Today is my first day working with Susan Flannery (Stephanie). That’s the reason I’m calling late because I was running lines with her. I get to work with her today and I’m very excited. I think we’re going to do some good work together,” he mused. As for what Owen and Stephanie have cooking up, you’ll have to wait to find out, because as Brandon explained, he was under strict orders from TPTB not to talk to me about his storyline. (Although he did describe playing Owen as “different” and “refreshing” as compared to playing Shawn on Days of Our Lives.) Even though I had several questions lined up about the mysterious Owen, I was just as happy to discuss how much fun the upcoming cruise is going to be! Explaining why he chose to board the Soap Cruise for its second voyage, Brandon shared, “I just loved the interaction with the fans. The events that we had, and just going on a cruise was a lot of fun. This year especially is going to be a lot more fun because we are on a much better ship, much nicer, better food and amenities and everything.”

Days of Our Lives - Former Days of our Lives Star, Jensen Ackles in New Movie!

The character of Eric Brady was recently mentioned onscreen when Marlena went to visit him after he got in a car accident, but that doesn’t mean his most recent portrayer, Jensen Ackles will be returning to Days of Our Lives any time soon. With a successful television career already underway, Ackles has also just been cast in the remake of the 1981 horror flick, “My Bloody Valentine.” Also starring Jaime King (“Sin City,” “Pearl Harbor”) and Kerr Smith (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Charmed”), “My Bloody Valentine” will be in 3-D and is set to be released in January 2009. Ackles will star as Tom, who ten years prior inadvertently caused a coal mining accident that killed five people and sent the only survivor, Harry, into a coma. Upon waking from his coma one year later on Valentine’s Day, Harry went on a rampage killing twenty-two people in the process. A decade later, Tom returns to his hometown to lay his guilt to rest over the past, but finds himself facing a killer in a miner’s mask with a pickaxe instead. Last seen in Salem in 2000, Eric is the son of Marlena and Roman and twin sister to Sami. He had become a photographer for Countess Wilhelmina where he met and fell in love with Nicole. Of course that didn't last and when Nicole got involved with Lucas, Eric turned his attentions toward Greta Von Amberg. However, he still loved Nicole and they began seeing each other again behind Lucas’s back. Soon after, Eric survived a near-fatal accident and then decided to leave Salem. After leaving Days, Jensen enjoyed lengthy guest stints on “Dark Angel,” “Dawson’s Creek and “Smallville” before landing a starring role as Dean, one of two brothers who battle paranormal events in the series “Supernatural.” Soaps.com would like to congratulate Jensen on all his post Days of Our Lives roles and wish him continued success on both the big and small screens!

(Originally reported on January 4, 2008) Boy do I have a treat for you guys. You know how you are always curious about the music that is behind some of the most moving scenes on General Hospital? For that matter, sometimes it's just a regular, run-of-the-mill scene but the music is what gives us the collective goose bump. In any case, Soaps.com has heard from a woman who not only composes music for ABC daytime, she has just released a CD for our personal listening pleasure! Her name is Rie Sinclair and I recently fired some questions her way because I knew you would all be very interested in what she has to say. Julie Clark Robinson: Thanks for letting Soaps.com know about your new CD Rie! Soaps.com fans are always asking us about the music behind GH and now we have a place to direct them! Let's start with the obvious question… where do you begin when you start the process of writing a song for a scene? Rie Sinclair: I think my imagination is rather vivid - sometimes more than I'd like it to be! But, much like acting - throwing your self into a role, or being moved by a piece of art, I find that everything is bendable. Words can be tricky & translucent and understanding what a music supervisor is asking for is usually up to my own interpretation. I want to find real substance in the feelings to create a song that could stand alone as well as perhaps work for the scenario. I try to find the overall vibe and then create a song that has a temperature tonally. And, the key, the arrangement, the instrumentation, as well as the lyrics of a song create that. Sometimes I just get lost in the idea of that moment and try to match the atmosphere. To speak less abstractly - I sit down at my large and very emptied dining room table with my laptop and a guitar, or poke at notes on my Korg and see if something sings to me. JCR: You write music for ABC soaps. So, are you an employee or an independent contractor? Are you in charge of all creative decisions in the process or does the show have input? For example, are you given a script to go by for a particular scene? Let us know how the process works. RS: I'm independent. Sometimes they'll ask me for a type of song just to have "in case", and sometimes I'll actually get a script. With Night Shift I had all the scripts,but I was a little more involved directly with the spin-off and part of the script. Still, I didn't know the ending. They intentionally closed almost every episode with a song I was singing, whether I reproduced an old hit or wrote something new. Typically, I'll get a request for a particular genre of music, or something that holds some specific element to capture a moment. JCR: How would you compare the musical challenge for writing for GH as opposed to All My Children and One Life to Live? RS: The styles of each of the Musical Directors for these shows vary. It's been interesting actually, to see who's been playing which songs. For instance, "Glow" has been on AMC quite a bit, but there's not the pull for the couples' theme songs like GH has asked for (which personally, I really quite love! It catapults you back into a memory you hope to never leave). OLTL seems to have a younger audience & with it, music that is stylistically appealing for the show. I like having the "no limitations" rule with writing, the "anything goes" rule. For one, it's not really a rule. But it's also fun & challenging to try to match different styles and pull off capturing various moments of life, which we all live.

The Bold and the Beautiful - Kay Alden Named as B&B’s Co-Head Writer

The Bold and the Beautiful has a new co-head writer. Keeping it all in the family, writer Kay Alden has been promoted and will be sharing the head writing responsibilities with Bradley Bell, who is also B&B’s executive producer. Ms. Alden is quite familiar with the Bell family vision, as she started working in soaps as a script writer for The Young and the Restless (created by William and Lee Phillip Bell) in 1974. She stayed in Genoa City for 32 years, where she served as the show’s head writer for part of that time. After leaving Y&R in 2006, Alden briefly worked as a story consultant at ABC for All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital. That job only lasted a couple of months and in 2007 she accepted the position of associate head writer on B&B. Soaps.com would like to congratulate Kay Alden on her new post as co-head writer and look forward to watching her vision continue to unfold.

One Life To Live - One Life to Live’s Jason Tam Talks To Soaps.com!

He can dance, he can sing and he’s captured the attention of fans everywhere… He’s One Life to Live’s Jason Tam (Markko)! Coming off of the Fourth of July, Jason admitted he spent the holiday resting… “I'm doing a show right now called The Black Sutis. It's a rock musical so I'm screaming my face off.” However, he did take some time out to chat with me about his career, the show’s Prom Night: The Musical, his fellow castmates and the current pregnancy storyline. Though Jason had no trouble collecting a daytime fan base, we wanted to touch base on his very impressive on and off Broadway credits and wondered how his last on-stage performance as Paul in A Chorus Line was different than performing as Markko on One Life to Live. “Paul and Markko are so different, and for a few months while ACL and OLTL overlapped I was playing them both at the same time so it was a cool challenge to keep them distinct. Paul is shy, self-conscious, has a huge inner emotional life that's repressed and has a very rigid physicality - like a wild animal that doesn't want to be spotted,” Jason admits. “All of this stems from his feelings of shame and inadequacy. Markko on the other hand is confident and proud to be who he is. In his head, he's a genius in a world of idiots. He knows he has a solution for everything, including everyone else's problems and is unafraid to share his opinions with the world. Markko's physicality is much looser than Paul's.” Thinking back to the first time Jason’s character lit up the screen in May of 2007, through his awesome voice and snappy dancing, I was curious if Jason was one to sing when he was little or if it had to be learned from the script. “I've been singing ever since I can remember. I started in the choir of the Church that I went to when I was about 5 years old, and have been singing ever since.” Given the fact that Jason clearly has many years of acting ahead of him, I asked where he saw his future: in soaps or going back and forth from television to stage performances? “I want to continue to do both television and theatre. Even though it's a crazy schedule, I wouldn't mind doing double duty again and being in a Broadway show and One Life to Live at the same time.” Though it’s clear Jason loves both sides of the business, we thought there must be something he gets out of Broadway productions verses his role on One Life to Live… “If you'd asked me this six months ago I would've said "process". Because OLTL, like all Soaps, basically shoots an entire episode every single day. There isn't a lot of time for on-my-feet rehearsal with my fellow actors,” Jason explained. “On the other hand, with ACL [A Chorus Line] we had a month of rehearsals and then a month and a half of previews in San Francisco before we opened in New York. That was a lot of time to get familiar with both the material and with my character. But now that I've been on OLTL for a year, I'm feeling more familiar with Markko and it's kind of like this past year has been one long rehearsal process.” Okay, so we all have been very impressed with the younger One Life to Live crowd for quite some time now, so I had to ask what the funniest thing about working with fellow actors Brittany Underwood (Langston), Brandon Buddy (Cole) and Kristen Alderson (Starr) is… “They're all crazy fun to work with!” Jason excitedly says. “It's hilarious and scary at the same time seeing Kristen with a baby bump - she has to wear this weird strap-on-hump to make it look like she's pregnant.” We really got to see these actors shine together during the Prom Night: The Musical storyline, so I was curious to know if Jason’s on-stage experience gave him an advantage over the other actors during the scenes. "My on-stage experience made learning all the dances and songs pretty easy because that stuff is like second nature to me. But I'd say that the majority of people that work on OLTL have some kind of stage experience. Kristen goes to a performing arts high school and was in Annie when she was younger. And Britt was in Mother Courage with Meryl Streep two summers ago. The only one in the teen storyline that hasn't' done a lot of theatre is Brandon but you wouldn't be able to tell that from watching it cause he worked hard and did a great job."

Guiding Light will be getting a unique guest star in a few weeks. With Remy Boudreau suddenly becoming a focal character this summer, we've been seeing more of his family once again. In the past two weeks, we've had numerous appearances from his over-achieving sister Mel, but now his parents are set to return. Although Kim Brockington will be resuming her role as Dr. Felecia Boudreau, the part of Remy's father, Clayton, has been recast with television talk show host Montel Williams. He will be taking over the role of the rarely scene patriarch from Peter Francis James. Williams is no stranger to the world of daytime. He has been hosting his self-titled talk show since 1991, picking up a Daytime Emmy for his work in 1996. For those who have been hoping that this year's summer love quadrangle (Ava-Bill-Lizzie-Remy) would be a sign of the future, there's a little news that ought to have a serious effect on it. It has been confirmed that Michelle Ray Smith (Ava Peralta Lewis) will be departing from Guiding Light. This news comes as little surprise considering the actress was set for maternity leave. Which brings us to more news: Miss Smith recently gave birth. The actress and her long term boyfriend Michael Jayden have just welcomed into the world a new baby boy who they have reportedly named Jake. Although the child was initially reported due on July the 21st, actress Cailtlin Van Zandt (Ashlee Wolfe) spilled the news of the birth in a recent interview. Soaps.com sends our congratulations to the couple on the arrival of their new son and wish them all the best! Smith's final air date will be July the 28th. Although the character has become a significant aspect of several key relationships on the series, the part is not expected to be recast. The character came into the world of Springfield in 2005 while on the run from a troubled life. She was quickly taken in by the Cooper family and began an on-again/off-again relationship with "Coop" Cooper. This romance was complicated by the advances of her boss at the time, Alan-Michael Spaulding. The outsider also discovered she wasn't as removed from Springfield as she initially thought. She discovered that her one time nemesis, Olivia Spencer, is actually her long-lost mother. The two have managed to put their past behind them and develop a caring relationship. Ava also proved to be as ambitious and manipulative as her mother, scheming to get Bill Lewis to marry her by being impregnated at a clinic and passing the child off as his. Although this plan was foiled, it began to fall apart anyway since she was already falling for another man, Remy Boudreau. Before joining the world of daytime, Smith had established herself as a model, appearing in the Victoria's Secret catalog as well as in commercials for Noxzema, Oil of Olay, Dannon, Dentyne Ice and Garnier Nutrisse.

She has indicated that she would love to stay on, but would want flexibility to pursue other projects, such as prime time TV and films. Genie Francis will return as Laura Spencer for a "brief" stint, according to GH Producers. *Although Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio) will be on GH: Night Shift, there are no plans (as of yet!) for him to appear on GH. *Kristin Herrera (Lourdes) and Rolando Molina (Sal) will be introduced on July 23rd (in recurring roles relating to Johnny's story line.)
